U12 Hurlers Win County Title

After the league section Lavey U12 Hurlers were the only team undefeated. This set up a tasty rematch with Swatragh in the semi final.

Swatragh were physically much stronger than Lavey and dominated early in the game against a hastily rejigged team, however they couldn’t get the vital scores when on top. Segdae Melaugh pulled off two wonderful saves to keep Lavey in touch. Niall Duggan was working very hard and put two frees over to settle Lavey nerves. After the break Charlie O’Neill went into nets with Melaugh sick as a trout.

The game was nip and tuck and with full time looming the sides were all square. Melaugh was brought on as full forward alongside his cousin Carla Collins and the switches worked. 1 goal chance was expertly saved but Melaugh wouldn’t be denied a second opportunity. He latched on to a ball from Aimon Duffin, found space and found the bottom corner. With Swatragh needing a goal the defence heroically stood firm to reach the final.

The young Lavey side then met Ballinascreen in the final which was played at Owenbeg. With illness, injury and holidays sorted Lavey were in a position to field their strongest team. With players restored to their usual positions Lavey were quick of the mark. Duffin, Scullion and O’ Neill dominated in defence with Pickering, Mc Corry and Collins making sure their men didn’t get an easy touch of the sliotar. Melaugh and Curley were working tirelessly in midfield with Duggan and Young causing havoc in the Screen defence. Charlie O’Neill was driving forward from centre back at every opportunity and Ballinascreen couldn’t handle the slick movement of Lavey’s forwards. Great interplay between Duggan, O’Kane and Downey opened up the defence time after time. Half time score- Lavey 4-2 Ballinascreen 0-2.

The second half was less energetic and Lavey pressure continued as substitutes were introduced. Dara Young got the goal he deserved with a tremendous flick on a ball that looked like it was going wide. Conlan O’ Kane scored a great point and even a late Screen goal couldn’t upset Lavey. Final score Lavey 7-4 Ballinascreen 1-4.

Lavey had many great performers on the night with Eoin Scullion, Aimon Duffin, Niall Duggan (cpt) and Charlie O’Neill standing out, however this was all in all a team performance. Lets hope the young players can continue this form into the future.
