U12 Footballers Win All-Ireland Tournament

Congratulations to the Lavey U12 Footballers who won the Newry Mitchel’s Tournament which took place on Saturday 2nd June.

The tournament is played annually and has grew from strength to strength. Now, in its 27th year, it has become one of the biggest underage tournaments in Ireland.

This was Lavey’s second time winning the Newry Mitchel’s tournament; the first was back in 1996 when they were captained by Martin McCloy and the team included Kevin O’Neill, Stephen Henry, Damian & Oran Shivers.

A total of 41 teams from three provinces and 13 counties across Ireland competed in the 2013 competition on Saturday (that’s around 1000 players), of which the young Lavey lads emerged victorious in the Cup section!

In their qualifying games, Lavey seen off competition from Dublin, Meath, Tyrone, Antrim, Laois, Armagh and Kildare to set up a final against St. Mary’s Ardee , County Louth.

Lavey led by three points at the break, however it was their strong second half performance which really secured their victory. Fintan Bradley had a superb game in the Lavey defence, while Jammie Duggan and Enda Downey controlled the midfield area. Ryan Magill and Enda Downey bagged the goals to put the game beyond the reach of Louth, Lavey winning by 2-9 to 0-5.

Enda Downey was selected as ‘player of the tournament.’

This team displayed tremendous skill levels and teamwork and would appear to have a bright future ahead of them! Congratulations to all the players and management!
