U-12 Footballers Win Hugh Glass Tournament (AGAIN!) to Cap Magnificant Season

The U-12 footballers retained the Glen tournament on Sat.5th October to finish off a brilliant year for these young lads.  Having already won the Castle Cup tournament, the St. Brigid’s Belfast tournament, the Newry Mitchel’s tournament and the Gary Doyle Memorial tournament in Letterkenny, hopes were high as the team left Gulladuff on Saturday morning.

Lavey were drawn against Limavady, Galbally and Slaughtneil in the group stages with the top two teams progressing to the semi-finals.

The first game against Limavady saw the Erins Own lads take some great scores and they emerged comfortable winners.  Calum Murray, having been ‘released’ into the forward line in the second half, scored a personal tally of three goals!

Next up came Galbally from County Tyrone; this was a great game of football.  The first half was very even; – with half time approaching, Lavey led only by a point when Calum Downey made a brilliant save.  From the resultant clearance, a great team move involving Cormac Collins, James McGurk and Ryan McGill saw Enda Downey score an important goal on the stroke of half time.  The second half saw the Lavey lads pull away from the Tyrone men with two goals from Jack Scullion sealing victory on a scoreline of 3-4 to 1-2.

The final group game was against Slaughtneil; this was a game which Lavey needed to win to finish top of their group.  A goal from Enda Downey and points from James McGurk, Ryan McGill, Jamie Duggan and Matthew Downey inspired Lavey to victory on a scoreline of Lavey 1-7 Slaughtneil 2-0,

The semi-final pitted Lavey against a very good Swatragh team; however the Lavey lads really upped their game and played some terrific football.  The defence of Cormac Collins, Calum Murray and Jamie Dugggan really stood out and kept the dangerous Swatragh forward line quiet to build a winning platform at the back.  Midfielders Enda Downey and Ryan McGill linked well with goalkeeper Calum Downey to win all our kickouts and they drove forward to score and support the forwards.  Matthew Downey, James McGurk, Jack Scullion and Joe Duggan were all in fine form and scores were coming from all players. Leading by 5pts at half time on a scoreline of 1-4 to 0-2, the turning point came at the start of the second half when Calum Downey saved a penalty and from the clearance, corner back Jamie Duggan raced away to score a brilliant point to put Lavey 6 up. Further points from James McGurk, Matthew Downey and Ryan McGill saw Lavey win on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-2.

A big Magherafelt team were the opponents in the final but in this game the Lavey boys played their best football of the day.  Full back and captain, Calum Murray was a real bear in the square at full back and was an inspiration to those around him. Two first half goals from Jamie Duggan and Jack Scullion, and points from Enda Downey, Matthew Downey and James McGurk laid the foundations for victory as Lavey led at half time 2-3 to 1-2.

Ryan McGill scored the first point of the second half from the throw in and then kicked a great pass over the Magherafelt defence to his midfield partner, Enda Downey, who blasted to the net.  Further points from Matthew Downey, James McGurk and a goal from Jack Scullion built a commanding lead.  Resolute defending was needed now as Magherafelt pressed hard on goals.  Cormac Collins was outstanding at corner back while Joe Duggan, Calum Murray and Jamie Duggan demonstrated excellent tackling and goalkeeper Calum Downey remained cool under pressure as Lavey saw the game out as winners, Lavey 4-7 Magherafelt 1-4.

Calum Murray followed in the footsteps of James Crawford and lifted the Hugh Glass cup for the second year in a row, presented to him by Conor Glass.

Enda Downey was selected as player of the tournament to round off a great day for these exceptional footballers who are a credit to their families and to their club.
