U-12 Footballers Crowned County Champions

Our brilliant U-12 team were crowned county champions in the final of the A competition in Swatragh on Saturday morning against a very good and sporting Bellaghy team. Played in glorious sunshine both teams produced a very high standard game which was played in the correct spirit for underage football and superbly refereed by Sean Curran, pity he wasn’t in charge of our recent senior game!

When these two teams met in the group stages, Lavey only won by a point so a large crowd turned out for this final including grandparents Henry Joe and Ave Downey who have now seen the next generation of Lavey players become County Champions.

The game started well for Lavey with our midfield of James Mc Gurk and Enda Downey controlling this sector and so the scores began to flow. Points from Calum Downey, Niall Duggan, Matthew Downey, Enda Downey(2) and James Mc Gurk saw Lavey race into a 6 point lead. A great team move started by Patrick Mc Gurk at corner back and carried at great pace by the superb Jamie Duggan saw Enda Downey finish with a blistering shot to the bottom corner and put us 1-6 to 0-0 up after 10 minutes.

Bellaghy came more into the game and scored a point from a free but defenders Niall Rafferty and Jack Scullion were playing superbly to deny any goal scoring opportunities. Laveys attacking play was a joy to watch as they kicked scores from all angles, changing the angle of attack with long kick passes and supporting at pace.

Further points from Enda Downey and James Mc Gurk saw Lavey in a commanding position as half time approached. Great tackling by Niall Rafferty and a great burst from defence by Jack Scullion saw Ruairi Magill straight through on goal, his shot was well blocked by the Bellaghy defence but the ever alert Matthew Downey was on hand to fire the rebound home for Laveys second goal. A great half of open football saw the half time score Lavey 2-8 Bellaghy 0-1

Lavey started the second half well and scored the first point from hard working midfielder James McGurk. Bellaghy then scored a breakaway goal to breathe new life into the game but Enda Downey won the resultant kickout and carried the ball strongly deep into the Bellaghy defence where his brother Calum was fouled close to goal. Matthew Downey popped over the free and from then to the finish Lavey controlled the game with Patrick McGurk reading the game intelligently at the back and mopping up a lot of loose balls and linking well with Jack Scullion, Niall Rafferty and the excellent Jamie Duggan who is lightning fast! Lavey goalkeeper Shea O Neill made 2 superb saves late on as 2 high balls in the blistering sunshine were difficult to deal with but he made sure they didn’t cross his goal line.

Laveys third goal was scored by Ruairi Magill after another great team move the full length of the pitch. It was started by Jack Scullion and Jamie Duggan, the two birthday boys, and a great pass by Niall Duggan ended with Ruairi Magill who goaled from close range. Lavey introduced subs Oisin Mc Corry, Colm Hasson, Ryan Farrell, Joseph McGurk, Tirnan Mc Cann and Louis Regan who all acquitted themselves well.

Final Score Lavey 3-11 Bellaghy 1-3
