Our U-10 footballers won the prestigious Bellaghy tournament on Saturday in brilliant fashion. With teams from all over Ulster and indeed Kilmacud Crokes from Dublin taking part, the standard of football was very high.

Lavey were drew in a very difficult qualifying group which consisted of Ardboe, Burren and Letterkenny. The first game against Ardboe saw a close first half; Lavey lead at half time by 2pts but the boys pulled away convincingly in the second half with goals from Calum Downey, Ruairi Magill and Louis Regan to win on a scoreline of Lavey 3-4 Ardboe 0-1.

The second game against Down champions Burren was a great game played in the correct spirit, it was a pleasure to watch. Lavey came out winners on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-5 with Calum Downey kicking the winner in the last minute, the goal coming from Niall Duggan.

The last group game against Letterkenny saw the Lavey lads play great attacking football to win on a scoreline of Lavey 4-7 Letterkenny 0-4, which left them top of their group. Conlan O Kane, Eoin Scullion, Calum Downey and Niall Duggan scored the goals. The performance of goalkeeper Shea O Neill and defenders Patrick McGurk, Dara Pickering, Charlie O Neill and Niall Rafferty meant that Lavey didn’t concede a goal in the three group games! The Lavey management knew there were stern tests ahead as the top 8 teams would now play off with the quarter finals now knockout games. Even though this was an 11 a side competition, Lavey used 17 players over the 3 group games as our managers gave all the boys game time which no other team in our group did.

Our quarter final opponents were Moortown, County Tyrone. This was an extremely competitive game as our lads found themselves under pressure. A quickly taken free in front of our goals, as our lads were retreating onto the goal line, saw us concede our only goal in the competition and trail at half time by 2pts. The deficit could have been worse but for some brilliant saves from goalkeeper Shea O Neill and resolute defending by Dara Pickering, Niall Rafferty and Patrick Mc Gurk against a strong breeze. The second half saw our lads show great character and discipline and with the game level going into injury time Calum Downey kicked a great point from play to send Lavey into the semi final; final score Lavey 0-6 Moortown 1-2. Lavey scorers Calum Downey 0-4, Eoin Scullion 0-1, Louis regan 0-1.

The semi Final opponents were Newbridge and surprisingly this turned out to be our easiest game of the day as our lads were now in super form and ran out convincing winners with all 17 players getting a game, goals came from Louis Regan(2), Niall Duggan, Ruairi Magill, Calum Downey and Eoin Scullion. Lavey 6-5 Newbridge 0-2.

Unsurprisingly, hosts Bellaghy were our opponents in the final. In front of a large crowd, the game was extremely close and Bellaghy took an early lead 0-3 to 0-1 before Niall Duggan scored a crucial goal to put Lavey ahead. Bellaghy equalised from a free and the half time score saw the teams level. The second half continued in the same pattern as the first with the teams trading scores until the last kick of the game which saw Calum Downey convert a free from a difficult distance to tie the scores and send the game into 2 periods of extra time to find a winner. Half time in extra time saw Bellaghy lead by a pt but the Lavey lads weren’t beaten yet. The opening minute of the second period saw Ruairi Magill score a great breakaway goal and points from Niall Duggan, Louis Regan and Conlan O Kane saw Lavey run out winners by 5pts.

Calum Downey and Oisin McGurk lifted the cup and all players got presented with beautiful trophies. Many congratulations to all our players and managers involved as their hard work is certainly paying off. A special thanks and congratulations to Bellaghy for a brilliantly organised and superbly run tournament.
