Lavey Win Hughes McElwee Cup

Lavey minor footballers picked up the club’s first trophy of the year by winning the Hughes McElwee Cup on Sunday 6th April.

Lavey reached the final having defeated the heavily favoured Glen side in the semi final, so they came into this game in great form- and they didn’t disappoint!

After a slow first five minutes, Lavey came into their stride playing some excellent free-flowing football.  A well balanced team; they dominated in both defence and attack and their ability to capitalise on turnovers resulted in some fine scores from Shea Downey, Dara McPeake, Mathew Bradley and Paul Tohill.

The pinnacle of the first half came around half way in; a Lavey free in the full back line was played to Shea Downey on the wing- Shea played a pin point 30 yard pass into the hands of the forward running Dara McPeake who in turn laid the ball off to captain Eamon Magill who finished to the back of the net.  Danny Shaw scored the second goal of the half just five minutes later.  The same player added a point to his tally to leave the half time score Lavey 2-7 Swatragh 0-3.

Swatragh opened the second half with a pointed free, however Lavey quickly regained composure and kept the score line ticking over with points from Dominic Duggan (2) and Dara McPeake.  Swatragh did stage a late comeback; however the Lavey full back line of Brendan Laverty and the two Toner brothers held strong with keeper’ Darren Brown also called upon to pull off a fantastic save.

A late penalty added to Swatragh’s score tally, however in truth this was a game in which Lavey looked comfortable throughout and were deserving winners.

This young side played an intelligent style of football much to the enjoyment of their spectators. The most notable aspect of their game was their support play and the balanced nature of the team.

Congratulations to the players and credit to their management team.

Let’s hope this cup is a sign of things to come!
