Lavey Termoneeny Centre Welcomes Canadian Visitors

Lavey GAC was the venue for a very enjoyable stop-over for a group of 25 Canadian visitors who are presently touring Ireland as part of the ‘Gathering’ year 2013.

The group of Irish language enthusiasts have embarked upon a tour of the Gaeltacht areas the length and breadth of Ireland to enrich their knowledge of Irish culture and the Irish language in particular. An earlier visit to an Carn in Maghera was followed by the Gulladuff visit.

The Canadian guests were welcomed to the Lavey/ Termoneeney Centre by our Club’s Cultural officer, Caoimhe O Neill.

Following refreshments and a tour of the premises, the guests settled in to an evenings craic agus ceol. Music and song was provided by Lavey’s own fantastic young musicians and singers.

Club Secretary Sean Mc Peake introduced Aralt Mac Giolla Chainnigh of the Canadian group who spoke of their experiences of the tour to date. The group have visited Kerry, Cork. Mayo, Connemara, Donegal and Derry to date and they are also planning to visit Belfast, Newgrange, Dublin and Waterford before returning to Canada.

A particularly enjoyable night was had by the Boyle family from Drumuck who were present to welcome their brother, Michael, (one of the Canadian visitors) back home to lavey. Michael emigrated to Newfoundland from Lavey several years ago and is currently significantly involved in the promotion and revival of all aspects of Irish culture and heritage within Newfoundland.

A most enjoyable evening was brought to an end with presents being exchanged by the group and club officials. Aralt warmly thanked their hosts for the hospitality received before the group embarked upon the tour bus and set off for Belfast for the next stage of their ‘gathering’ tour.
