Lavey Termoneeny Centre awarded a William Keown Trust Award

Lavey GAC & the Termoneeny Community Association were recently awarded a ‘William Keown Trust’ Access Award.

The William Keown Trust was founded in 1979.  The trust aims to ‘highlight the achievements and promote the dignity of people with disabilities’.  With the introduction of the Disability Discrimination Act in 1995, businesses are required by law to ensure that their premises are accessible for people with disabilities.  To further underline the Trust’s commitment to work towards the removal of physical barriers which may limit people with disabilities from participating fully in the life of their community, the unique William Trust Access Awards were introduced.  These awards are held on an annual basis and provide public recognition for those organisations which have worked to make their buildings accessible for all the community.

Having received a nomination for an access award, a visitation panel from the William Keown Trust carried out an inspection of the Lavey Termoneeny Centre and were delighted with the fully inclusive facilities on offer.  Comments were made on the excellent car parking facilities, level access and automatic doors, sanitary & changing accommodation and IFI accredited fitness suite (with machines designed especially for people with disabilities).  The construction, fittings and fixtures far exceed building control requirements and make the building usable and welcoming to all.

Members of Lavey GAC and the Termoneeny Community Association, the project Architects (McGurk Chartered Architects) and building contractor (P&K McKaigue) were invited to receive the award at a ceremony held in the Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh.

Congratulations to all involved in the construction of the project and to the staff and committee members for the great work they continue to do in ensuring that sport can be enjoyed by all, including those in our community who have special needs.
