Lavey Draw as Senior Hurling League Gets Off to a Start

Lavey hurler’s league campaign got off to a start on Saturday (6th April) where they picked up one point from a tight encounter against a strong Slaughtneil side.  Lavey started the game well with Paddy Henry and skipper O’Boyle impressing from the half forward line; the pair traded scores between them with Liam Murphy also finding the posts in the first quarter.  The Slaughtneil full forward line however, looked dangerous and despite the best efforts of Shane Lagan and Ryan Farren, Lavey found themselves trailing by two points as the Slaughneil forwards began to hit a quick succession of scores.  Cailean O’Boyle drifted towards the inside line where he found himself on the end of a long ball into the square and he confidently finished to score the first goal of the game.  O’Boyle and  Liam Og Magill added further points to push Lavey ahead as the game neared half time.

The game had a physical presence from the outset, but became heated nearing the end of the first half when a series of challenges from both sides went unpunished by the referee who waived for play to continue.  Lavey were dealt a tough blow when the resulting scuffle resulted in midfielder, Ben Dodds, side-lined with a straight red card.

Only the goal separated the sides at half time, Lavey leading 1-8 to 0-8 with all Lavey’s scores coming from play.

Despite playing with fourteen men, Lavey started the second half well with Paddy Henry scoring two frees, then adding a well taken goal to his impressive personal tally after a good pass from Cailean O’Boyle.  Slaughtneil added a further three points (two frees) before Liam Og Magill displayed great skill to slot a side-line ball between the posts to keep Lavey four points ahead.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Slaughtneil began to take advantage of the extra man and put the Lavey defence under extreme pressure.  Slaughtneil went on to score eight unanswered points, two from placed balls to lead the game by the minimum of margins with only a few minutes left on the clock.  Lavey refused to give up and continued to push forward; Chrissy and Paddy Henry both had chances to equalise but found their efforts agonisingly short/wide.  It was fitting that captain O’Boyle who had an excellent game throughout, found the posts to equalise in the dying seconds to leave the final score Lavey 2-13 Slaughtneil 0-19.
