Championship Title for U16 Camogs

IMG_3082IMG_3076Congratulations to Lavey u16 camoges who won the B championship yesterday in an exciting game against Kilrea.

Lavey started strong, going 1:1 to 0:1 ahead after a free from Clare Madden and a goal from Eilis Toner, with Niamh Gribben pulling out all the stops in nets. The side worked hard with great tackling from Emma Scullion and Niamh Conway, only conceding one more point in the opening quarter. Soon after, Eilis Toner netted to increase Lavey’s lead to five points. However, Kilrea fought back with a goal and a point to decrease their deficit to just one point at half time.

Half time score: Lavey 2:1 Kilrea 1:3

Lavey hit the second half running. Eilis Toner weaved through the Kilrea defence to bag her third goal of the game. This was followed up by a long range effort from Brianna Kelly which secured Lavey’s fourth goal which looked likely to send them on their way to victory. However it proved to be a game of goals when Kilrea grabbed two more of their own – one from a 30 yard free – leaving just one point between the teams once more.

The young Lavey side raised their game. The Kilrea keeper made a great save to deny Eilis Toner after good work from Brianna Kelly and Aine McGill. The defence worked hard with Orla Ward and Ceara O’Neill keeping Kilrea’s skilful forwards at bay and Niamh Gribben pulled off another great save. A long puck out from Emer Madden was swept up by her sister, Clare, who found Maria Rafferty in the forward line to pick up a great point. In the next attack, Emer, who was superb on frees, launched the ball into the forward line and this time Aine McGill was denied on goal. But another goal was on the cards. After good work from Eilis Toner and Lauren Martin, Beth Kilpatrick fired back from injury with Lavey’s fifth goal of the match. This proved to be the final score of the game, after tireless defending from Cara McGoldrick, Enya Ward and Sinead McGill meant Kilrea found it difficult to get into the scoring zone. Lavey’s dominance in midfield ensured victory, with an excellent display of fielding from Niamh Conway throughout, and Captain Aine McGill was presented with the shield.

Congratulations to Eileen, Janette and the girls on their well earned success.
