Castle Cup Champions 2013

St Brigid’s Mayogall captured the Castle Cup for the first time since 1999 in Glen on Monday.

Mayogall came through a group of St Canices Dungiven, New Row and St Mary’s Greenlough and after beating all three, Dungiven provided their sternest test. Mayogall played some great attacking football with James McGurk, Enda Downey and Ryan McGill taking great scores in the process.

After coming through the quarter final, Mayogall met Dungiven again in the semi and found themselves in an even tougher game than the league stage encounter. However, goals from Enda Downey and James McGurk helped them pull away in style as the defence of Callum Murray and Joe Duggan held firm.

Mayogall came up against a strong St Johns Swatragh side in the final. The first half again proved a nip and tuck affair with a big crowd looking on. The Swatragh full forward pairing were causing problems and had Mayogall on the back foot, but manager Neil McCloy reshuffled his defense by moving Jamie Duggan back and this proved to be a great decision.

Matthew Downey and James McGurk won great ball up front and Enda Downey again stepped up to the mark by scoring goals at vital times in the second half to put clear daylight between the teams.

Man of the match, Jamie Duggan also burst out of defense on several occasions to help inspire the orange and blacks to a comfortable win in the end up.

The team will go to Glen again on Monday to complete in the hurling equivalent of the competition with similar aspirations.
