Cardiac Risk in the Young

On Saturday 18th July, a large number of Lavey minor hurlers attended a heart screening clinic in Derry City, which was facilitated by the Cardiac Risk in the Young organisation (CRY).

The CRY programme not only identifies most cardiac abnormalities but also raises awareness about the fact that young people with undiagnosed abnormalities can die suddenly from heart problems and not just in the sporting arena. Research has shown that at least 12 young people die suddenly each week of previously undetected heart problems. It is important to stress that the majority of these deaths are preventable.

The screening, at Ulster University, will have hopefully encouraged these young Lavey hurlers to take better care of their heart/health in a broader sense. It was also to reassure parents who are well aware that these tragedies occur and often cannot gain access to further information at a time when there are increasing demands on physical fitness in all sports.

Many thanks to the Cardiac Risk in the Young organisation for facilitating this screening and also to the parents who filled out all the various documents to enable the young hurlers to avail of this screening.

Of course, all this talk of healthy hearts etc. didn’t stop the lads from stopping in McDonalds on the way home!!!!
